Rectangular Weave | Thomas Barter
The basis for the work is a homage to weaving. I grew up in a household with rugs on the floor from many different cultures. In this work I am using the glass sticks to represent the warp of a rug with the negative space acting as the weaving.
I have always played with pattern. This grew out of starting my art career as a tile artist. I was drawn to tile by the tessellations and the unlimited ways you could arrange pattern. In my new glass work I am looking at repetition and creating patterns in the same way that I might in my early tile pieces. By keeping the pattern simple and hanging the glass vertically I hope to create the impression of a rug on the wall.
