Koreke | Mike Crawford
I first came across the koreke in ‘Buller’s Birds of New Zealand’. It is Aotearoa’s only native quail and has no fluke on its head like the introduced quail. Koreke became extinct in the late 1800’s after being hunted by human and animalian predators alike. So little is known about the koreke and many New Zealanders do not know they existed at all. Hopefully these works can go some way to honouring these diminutive manu and serve as a reminder to look after what we’ve got.
